Vehicle Safety & Technology | Geely

The Geely Starray EM-i has earned a five-star ANCAP safety rating (the highest possible result) under the 2023-2025 assessment criteria.

Introduced to Australia in September 2025, the Starray EM-i is a plug-in hybrid medium SUV available in two variants. The rating was published in February 2026 and applies to all variants built from June 2025 onwards.

With an Adult Occupant Protection score of 90 per cent and a Vulnerable Road User Protection score of 86 per cent, the Starray EM-i sits at the top of the Geely range in both categories. As with every ANCAP article we publish at Barton's Motor Group, the full details are below, so Queensland buyers can make a genuinely informed decision.

What is an ANCAP Safety Rating, and Why Does it Matter?

ANCAP independently crash-tests and rates new vehicles sold in Australia and New Zealand at accredited facilities, completely separate from manufacturer safety claims. A five-star rating is the highest result achievable and is applied using the same criteria for all passenger vehicles regardless of powertrain.

ANCAP assesses four key categories: Adult Occupant ProtectionChild Occupant ProtectionVulnerable Road User Protection, and Safety Assist.

Adult Occupant Protection: 90% (36.23 out of 40)

What Was Tested

The Geely Starray EM-i was assessed through a frontal offset test at 50 km/h, a full-width frontal test at 50 km/h, a side impact at 60 km/h, an oblique pole test at 32 km/h, far-side impact tests, and whiplash protection assessments.

What the Results Show

Adult occupant protection is one of the Starray EM-i's strongest categories at 90 per cent. The passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal offset test with no deductions applied. Both the driver and front passenger received adequate protection for the lower legs, with good protection across all other body regions. The vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility penalty was 3.47 points, reflecting a moderate risk to occupants of an oncoming vehicle in this test.

In the full-width frontal test, chest protection for the driver was adequate, with good protection across all other body areas. The rear passenger also received adequate chest protection, with good results elsewhere. While these chest results are not maximum, they represent solid performance in a test that challenges many vehicles.

The side impact result was exceptional, scoring the maximum available 6.00 out of 6 points with good protection across all critical body regions. The oblique pole test returned near-maximum points at 5.93 out of 6. The whiplash protection score was 3.99 out of 4 and the far-side impact score was the full 4.00 out of 4.00, with the centre airbag providing good head protection for both front occupants and good prevention of excursion in the vehicle-to-vehicle far-side scenario. What does this mean? Basically, in a T-bone style accident involving another vehicle, the seatbelts and airbags did an excellent job of stopping the occupant on the non-struck side of the car from being thrown across the cabin.

The rescue and extrication score was 3.00 out of 4. Both doors and windows passed submergence testing, remaining functional for the minimum required time period. An eCall system earned its default 1.00 point. Multi-collision braking scored 1.00 point.

Child Occupant Protection: 87% (42.81 out of 49)

What Was Tested

Child occupant protection is assessed through dynamic crash testing using six-year-old and ten-year-old child dummies in frontal offset and side impact scenarios, as well as a practical assessment of how standard Australian and New Zealand child restraints can be installed.

What the Results Show

The Geely Starray EM-i returned outstanding child occupant crash test results.

In the frontal offset test, both the six-year and ten-year dummies scored good protection across all critical body regions, with the Starray EM-i earning the maximum 16.00 out of 16 points. In the side impact test, all critical body areas were good for both dummies, earning the maximum 8.00 out of 8 points. Perfect dynamic crash test scores in both tests is a meaningful result for families.

ISOFix lower anchorages are fitted to both rear outboard seats, with top tether anchorages across all rear seating positions. Most child restraint types can be installed in most rear positions. One of the selected booster seats could not be correctly installed in the centre rear seating position.

A child presence detection (CPD) system is fitted as standard. However, the system did not meet ANCAP's requirements in testing and was not awarded points. The system is present on the vehicle, buyers should note this testing outcome.

Vulnerable Road User Protection: 86% (54.44 out of 63)

What Was Tested

VRU protection covers the physical construction of the vehicle's bonnet and windscreen and the performance of the AEB system in detecting and reacting to pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.

Physical Impact Results

The bonnet and windscreen provided good to adequate head protection to pedestrians over most of the surface, with marginal to poor results at the stiff windscreen pillars and the front edge of the bonnet. Pelvis protection was good or adequate. Femur protection was good with near-maximum points, and lower leg protection was good with maximum knee and tibia points awarded.

Autonomous Emergency Braking: Pedestrians, Cyclists, and Motorcyclists

The VRU AEB system operates from 10 km/h to 90 km/h in forward scenarios.

Forward pedestrian AEB was rated good, with collisions avoided or mitigated in most tests including turning scenarios, day and night, scoring 6.46 out of 7. In reverse (AEB Backover), performance was rated adequate (1.00 out of 2), providing meaningful protection when reversing towards pedestrians in driveways and car parks.

Cyclist AEB was rated good, with collisions avoided or mitigated at most test speeds including turning scenarios. The Starray EM-i provides an information alert when a cyclist is approaching from behind. No warning or door retention is provided.

Motorcyclist AEB was rated good in both forward and turning scenarios, earning the full 6.00 out of 6 points. Lane support in car-to-motorcyclist emergency lane keeping scenarios earned 2.50 out of 3 points, reflecting good performance in most scenarios.

Safety Assist: 82% (14.92 out of 18)

What Was Tested

Safety Assist evaluates AEB for car-to-car scenarios, lane support, speed assistance, seat belt reminders, and driver monitoring.

Car-to-Car AEB

The car-to-car AEB system operates from 4 km/h to 150 km/h. Testing returned good performance across all four standard car-to-car scenarios, stationary, slower-moving, lightly braking, and heavily braking vehicles ahead, scoring 3.68 out of 4. AEB Junction performance was good. AEB Crossing performance was adequate, with the system autonomously braking in some but not all crossing scenarios. AEB Head-On performance was adequate (0.50 out of 1).

Lane Support System

The lane support system operates from 65 to 170 km/h, covering lane keep assist (LKA) and emergency lane keeping (ELK). Both were rated good in car-to-car testing, earning the full 3.00 out of 3 points, a perfect lane support score.

Speed Assistance and Driver Monitoring

The Starray EM-i includes intelligent adaptive cruise control (iACC), camera and map-based speed sign recognition, an intelligent speed limiter, and a manual speed limiter as standard. Speed assistance scored 2.41 out of 3.

A direct driver monitoring system (DMS) detecting driver distraction and fatigue is fitted as standard, scoring 1.25 out of 2 points. The system provides a warning and can adjust driver assistance parameters. Seat belt reminders with occupancy detection for all seating positions scored the full 1.00 out of 1.
