What Should You Look for When Buying a New Car Brand in Australia?

Australian car buyers have more choice than ever.

Over the past few years, a growing number of car brands have entered the Australian market, bringing new technology, competitive pricing and more petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric options.

For buyers, that competition is a good thing. There are more vehicles to choose from and manufacturers have to work harder to offer good value.

But if you're comparing a newer brand with one that's been in Australia for decades, there's more to think about than the price and features.

Bartons Motor Group Managing Director Mark Beitz was recently asked by Drive for his thoughts on the number of new automotive brands entering Australia and what will matter if they want to build a long-term presence here.

It also raises a practical question for buyers. What should you look at if you're considering a brand that's relatively new to Australia?

Servicing, parts, aftersales support and the dealer network are all worth looking into before you buy.

Australia's New Car Market Is Changing

The Australian car market looks very different today than it did even five years ago.

Newer brands are giving drivers more choice across SUVs, utes, passenger cars, hybrids and EVs. At the same time, established manufacturers are bringing out new models and technology of their own.

For buyers, one of the questions is whether a brand has the support in place to look after customers for the years ahead. A competitive purchase price is important, but it's not the whole story.

Speaking with Drive, Mark said:

"The current number of brands in this country is not sustainable without some form of rationalisation of the industry."

That doesn't mean buyers should rule out newer brands. It just means it's worth looking beyond the badge and understanding the support behind the vehicle before making a decision.

What Should You Look for When Buying a New Car Brand?

If you're considering a brand you haven't owned before, here are a few things worth checking.

1. Is There a Local Dealer and Service Network?

Find out where your nearest authorised dealership and service centre is.

Having local support can make servicing, warranty work, recalls and repairs much easier over the life of the vehicle.

For buyers around Wynnum, Manly, Brisbane's Bayside and the Redlands, having an authorised dealership nearby with trained technicians and access to genuine parts can make a real difference.

2. What Aftersales Support Is Available?

Aftersales support is easy to overlook when you're comparing price, features and specifications, but it can have a big impact once you own the car.

Check what support is available after the sale, including scheduled servicing, warranty support, roadside assistance, genuine parts, trained technicians, customer support and software updates where relevant.

A long warranty can be appealing, but it's also worth knowing where warranty work is carried out and what servicing and parts support is available locally.

Mark also spoke to Drive about the importance of aftersales support:

"The quality of cars now is fairly equal; it's hard to find a bad car in the market these days."

As vehicles become more competitive on quality, features and technology, the experience after you buy can become an important point of difference.

3. Are Parts Readily Available in Australia?

Parts are another thing worth asking about, particularly with brands that are still growing their Australian operations.

Ask the dealership where parts are held, how they're supplied and what local parts support is available.

A newer brand won't necessarily have parts issues. Many are investing heavily in their Australian operations and supply chains. It's simply another part of the buying decision, along with price, features, safety and warranty.

4. How Invested Is the Brand in Australia?

It's also worth looking at what a manufacturer is doing in Australia beyond selling cars.

A growing dealer network, local parts facilities, customer support, technician training and continued new model launches can all show the level of investment being made in the Australian market.

Speaking about some of the emerging brands Bartons represents, Mark told Drive:

"These brands are taking this part of the business seriously. To me, as a dealer, it signals they are here for the long term."

Are Chinese Cars a Good Choice in Australia?

It's getting harder to talk about "Chinese cars" as if they're all the same.

There are big differences between brands when it comes to vehicles, technology, warranties, dealer networks and aftersales support. Chinese manufacturers now offer everything from affordable small SUVs and family cars to utes, hybrids, plug-in hybrids and premium EVs.

Bartons represents a number of established and emerging brands across Brisbane's Bayside and the Redlands, including Chery, GAC, GWM, MG, XPENG, Geely, Farizon and Foton.

Rather than choosing or ruling out a vehicle because of where it was made, look at the individual car and the support behind it.

Check its safety credentials, features, warranty, servicing requirements, parts support and dealer network. Most importantly, make sure the vehicle suits how you'll actually use it.

Why Does the Dealership Matter When Buying a New Car?

A dealership's role doesn't end when you drive away.

You'll potentially deal with the dealership for years through servicing, warranty work, recalls, parts, accessories and eventually your next vehicle.

That can be even more important when you're buying a brand you haven't owned before and may have more questions about.

Bartons Motor Group has been part of Brisbane's automotive industry since 1945 and today represents a mix of established and emerging brands across Wynnum and Capalaba.

The brands in our showrooms have changed over the years, but looking after customers after they buy remains just as important.

More Brands Mean More Choice for Brisbane Drivers

More brands in Australia means more choice for buyers, along with new technology and different vehicle options across a wide range of price points.

The important thing is knowing what to look for.

Whether you're considering a brand that's been in Australia for decades or one that's relatively new, look beyond the purchase price. Find out who will service the vehicle, understand the warranty, ask about parts and look at the dealer and service network.

Those things can matter just as much over the life of the car as what's on the specification sheet.
